Whether you’re a daily commuter, a track day fanatic, or an overland adventurer, tire pressure is extremely important. You’ve probably heard the phrase “take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you” from your mechanic. And they’re right. Improperly inflated tires can wear more quickly, increase fuel consumption, and even impede the comfort and handling of your vehicle. While most quick-change tire shops will give you a cheap pencil-style gauge as a party favor, here are five proper gauges to help you look after your tires.
Most tire pressure gauges give you readings through a digital display or an analog dial. The digital option will be more expensive, giving you a numerical value, with many offering a backlit display if you’re adjusting tire pressures at night; these are great, but we highly recommend carrying a spare set of batteries. The alternative is an analog gauge, which is much more reliable as it doesn’t need batteries and only has one moving part.
You’ll notice some of the cheaper units on this list can only check tire pressure and bleed excess air if you get trigger-happy with your compressor. Some of the nicer units are compatible with a compressor, giving you the ability to also add air. Look at the frequency of how often you’re checking your tire pressure, or even if you have an air system at home. Some of the cheaper gauges are more than enough if you’re topping up air at the gas station every few months. If you’re regularly adjusting tire pressures for a track day or trail excursion, some of the more expensive units here can also air down faster than others.
Contrary to popular belief, tire pressure gauges can get quite complicated. If you’re a daily driver looking to gradually step up your maintenance routine, you should go with a basic gauge that gives you a precise reading and the ability to take some air out if you get trigger-happy with your compressor. Don’t spend more than $25 if this sounds like you. However, if you participate in extracurricular automotive activities, you should go for the fancier gauges with digital displays and the ability to add or subtract air.
As a lifelong automotive enthusiast, I’ve developed a deep understanding of how tires function on the road, on the race track, and on the trail. Much of my learning involved tweaking tire pressures to the conditions, where a proper gauge became an invaluable tool. I leaned on my experience to help narrow down the contenders for this list, taking into account the number of functions each gauge has, the build quality, how readable the dial/screen is, and so on.
For what it’s worth, I keep the ARB601 Digital Tire Pressure Gauge in my daily driver, paired with the Aussie brand’s onboard air compressor. You’ll see below that it’s my best overall pick and for good reason: Its backlit digital display is easy to read, it’s compatible with an air compressor, and it’s very likely the last tire pressure gauge I’ll ever need. I’ve included five additional options below that impressed me with their specs.
While the ARB601 is the most expensive unit by a considerable margin, you get what you pay for. It’s the only gauge on our list that can inflate, deflate, and check tire pressures. The backlit LCD screen especially comes in handy after the sun goes down. Our only gripe is that the gauge doesn’t auto-correct after letting air out; once you’ve made an adjustment you have to pop the chuck off of the valve stem and back on again to get another accurate reading.
This Jaco tire pressure gauge presents great value for what it offers. Along with its backlit digital display, the Elite features a 360-degree adjustable chuck, including a rapid air bleeder, that can rotate for optimal contact with the valve stem. All of the fittings feature solid-brass construction, and the body of the gauge is reinforced using a rubberized shield. While the digital display is a great addition, it runs on two AAA batteries, so make sure you have spares on hand.
If you scoffed at the ARB601’s $70 pricetag, this could be the gauge for you. Mechanically, the ARB605A is effectively identical to the 601 with an analog dial instead of a digital display readout. You’re saving over $20 and still getting a high-quality gauge that is overbuilt for most of the work you and I will be using it for. If anything goes wrong with the 605, it’s backed by ARB’s three-year warranty following the time of purchase.
ARB has a tremendous off-road pedigree, arming enthusiasts with bullet-proof gear since 1975. This unit is no exception, with a bronze Bourdon gauge, a braided steel hose, and solid-brass construction. The chuck on the ARB505 can also temporarily remove the valve core, allowing for much faster air-down times.
While Viair is best known for its top-notch air compressors, this gauge-deflator combo from the industry giant shares the same fit and finish. It isn’t the fastest to deflate, but the twist-on chuck eliminates any guesswork when connecting to the valve stem.
While this gauge is the most affordable here, it isn’t lacking very many features. The chuck features the same 360-degree swivel and rapid-air bleeder as the Jaco, and all of the fittings are also made of solid brass. Sure, it does have an analog dial instead of a digital display, which many would argue is a downgrade. But it eliminates the worst-case scenario of batteries going dead.
