Combustion of municipal waste results in an environment within the boiler that is extremely corrosive. Corrosion in waste-fired boilers is primarily caused by chloride compounds which deposit on the furnace and convection pass tubes in combination with high temperatures. Proper protection from corrosion in these areas is paramount to plant availability and the successful long-term operation of these key boiler components.

B&W developed Cyclone furnace technology to burn coal grades that are not well-suited for pulverized coal combustion. The ash from these coals has a very low melting temperature. Our extensive experience gives us a unique perspective on the optimal, most efficient and cost-effective way to clean boilers that burn a variety of fuels, in any operating condition.

Long retractable sootblowers periodically require adjustment of head pressure settings to achieve desired steam pressure levels for cleaning. Historically, to adjust head pressure settings, standard poppet valves had to be closed and isolated and the sootblower shut off – oftentimes across the entire bank. The Diamond Power® EAPC™ poppet valve was developed specifically to solve this problem, and has undergone significant design improvements since its first introduction in the 1990s.

B&W's Diamond Power® Gemini® sootblower nozzle, designed specifically for recovery boiler applications, outperforms other nozzle designs with its patented, cast body and staggered jets. Shortly after our establishment in 1867, we designed the world's first installed utility boiler. B&W boilers now provide more than 300,000 MW of generating capacity in approximately 60 countries. Since then, we've designed and constructed many supercritical and and ultra-supercritical power plants using technology representing the most advanced steam cycle conditions commercially available today.

A once-through boiler for supercritical applications, usually applied to systems with a capacity of 400 MW or larger; the design features a water-cooled dry-bottom furnace, superheater, reheater, economizer, and air heater components — designed for both base load and full boiler variable pressure load cycling operation as well as on/off cycling operation.

Proper, turbulent mixing of the flue gases in the boiler furnace provides a better combustion process and burn-out in the gas phase. With the B&W Volund VoluMix™ system, all of the primary air passes through the narrow gap between the grate bars, creating a strong, turbulent combustion zone. The system is installed at the inlet of the first pass.

The air-cooled Vølund™ grate from B&W is one of the most dependable waste-to-energy grates available. It is designed for highly efficient continuous combustion of household waste, including lower calorific waste, and can withstand very high temperatures with a long operational life.

Flue gas cleaning systems reduce atmospheric emissions of substances that are hazardous to the environment and health, including heavy metals, dioxins and substances that cause acidification and eutrophication. We offer subsystems and fully assembled systems for both new or existing installations, to clean flue gases generated by the incineration of hazardous municipal and industrial waste and the combustion of biofuels.

B&W provides a wide range of advanced technologies, components and upgrades for energy-from-waste combustion plants. Our latest innovations include highly efficient boilers, combustion grates and ash extraction systems, waste fuel feeders, water-cooled furnace wear zones and air systems.

Water-cooled wear zones are a revolutionary, efficient, and economical way to improve operational accessibility and productivity for waste-fired power plants. Experiences from the plants where we have installed water-cooled wear zones show that the total annual energy production has increased significantly – in many cases by as much as 25-30%.

B&W's SPIG® natural draft and induced or forced draft wet cooling tower systems can be designed for a wide range of project requirements such as high seismic and wind loads, vibration control, corrosion resistance, low-noise emission, sub-freezing operation and fresh, geothermal, sewer or sea water applications. Cooling tower structures can be customized using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), precast or cast in situ concrete, steel or wood.

For fine particulate, condensables and acid mist collection, B&W’s wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP) system design is based on our extensive experience with a wide range of industrial, refinery and power applications, including more than 5000 ESP installations, worldwide.

B&W’s proven technology, flexibility of design options and advanced features of our wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems help to reduce emissions in new or retrofit applications. Our scrubbers, have operated efficiently, economically and reliably since 1971. As a multi-pollutant control device, B&W’s wet scrubbers can remove up to 99% SO2 and also help control filterable (solid) particulate, acid mist and mercury.

For coal-fired power generation applications, B&W's spray dryer offers true zero liquid discharge (ZLD) by using the latent heat of the boiler flue gas to evaporate the entire wet FGD waste stream. Building on our expertise in spray drying for SO2 control, B&W developed ZLD spray dryers for owners and operators of existing coal plants who are evaluating options for wet FGD wastewater.
